Georgia Carter has returned to a lake called The Devil’s Inkwell in New Mexico, where her husband, a scientist, disappeared three years earlier.  Near the baobab tree that they planted, she meets a man who agrees to help her find out what happened to her husband, but George is suspicious of his motives.  Two thousand years in the future, in the shade of the same baobab, a team of archeologists of another species also seeks to solve the mystery of the vanishing scientist.  As the stranger provides George with clues, she must decide how much she really wants to know and whether she should help him with his plan to end the reign of humans on Earth.
